History of Height Measurement

Human height has been measured with body-based units for millennia, standardised into metric and imperial systems over time.

Body-Based Standards

The foot and cubit were among the earliest length units, derived from the human body. The Roman foot, about 29.6 cm, influenced later European units.

Because bodies vary, these units differed between regions until kings and guilds imposed local standards.

The Metre and Metrication

The metre, created during the French Revolution as one ten-millionth of the equator-to-pole distance, gave the world a universal length standard adopted by most countries.

Height in centimetres became the global norm for medicine and identity documents.

Feet and Inches Today

A few countries, chiefly the United States, still record height in feet and inches, defined since 1959 as exactly 30.48 cm per foot and 2.54 cm per inch.
