Formula and worked example
°F = °C × 1.8 + 32. The 32 offset is water’s freezing point in Fahrenheit; the 1.8 factor is the 180-degree Fahrenheit span over the 100-degree Celsius span.
Convert 37 °C to Fahrenheit: 37 × 1.8 + 32 = 98.6 °F — normal body temperature on both scales at once.
When you need this
American recipes bake at 350 °F while European ovens dial to 175 °C, and weather forecasts switch between the scales at borders. Fever guidance, thermostat settings and aquarium heaters all need the same arithmetic. Only this pair has an offset, which is why mental conversions go wrong here.
Questions people ask
How do I convert °C to °F in my head?
Double the Celsius and add 30 — it is a rough answer good to within a few degrees; the exact rule is × 1.8 + 32.
What is 200 °C in Fahrenheit?
392 °F — a common baking temperature that US recipes write as 400 °F.
What is minus 40?
−40 °C = −40 °F — the one temperature where both scales agree.
What is body temperature in both?
37 °C = 98.6 °F.
Why the +32?
Fahrenheit puts water’s freezing point at 32, so the scale is shifted 32 degrees relative to Celsius.
