Mean, Median, Mode, and Range Explained

Mean, median, mode, and range are fundamental concepts in statistics used to summarize and analyze sets of numbers. These measures help describe the "average" and spread of data in fields like mathematics, economics, science, business, and data analysis.

Mean (Arithmetic Average)

The mean is calculated by adding all numbers in a data set and dividing by the total number of values.

Mean = (Sum of all values) ÷ (Number of values)

Example: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10

(2 + 4 + 6 + 8 + 10) ÷ 5 = 6

Median (Middle Value)

The median is the middle number in a sorted data set.

Odd count

3, 5, 7, 9, 11

Median = 7

Even count

2, 4, 6, 8

(4 + 6) ÷ 2 = 5

Mode (Most Frequent Value)

The mode is the number that appears most often in a data set.

Example: 1, 2, 2, 3, 4 → Mode = 2

Unimodal – one mode

Bimodal – two modes

Multimodal – more than two

Range (Spread of Data)

The range measures how spread out a data set is.

Range = Maximum value − Minimum value

Example: 3, 7, 12, 20 → Range = 20 − 3 = 17

Calculate average, median, mode, and range of a data set — for statistics, data analysis, and academic work.

Formula

Average = sum ÷ count. Median = middle value. Mode = most frequent. Range = max - min.

Reference Values

  • •Average can be skewed by outliers
  • •Median is robust to outliers
  • •Mode may not exist or be unique
