What Is Tipping?

Tipping is the practice of giving an extra payment (a "tip" or gratuity) to service workers — such as servers, drivers, or hotel staff — on top of the base price of a service.

Usually voluntary (though sometimes socially expected)
Often calculated as a percentage of the bill
Meant to reward good service — or supplement low wages

Tipping Around the World Today

🇺🇸 United States

Strong tipping culture. 15–25% is common in restaurants. Workers often rely on tips as primary income.

🇯🇵 Japan

Tipping is uncommon and can be seen as rude. Good service is expected as part of the job.

🇪🇺 Europe

Tips are usually smaller (5–10%) or already included. Service charges are often built into the bill.

Calculate tip amount and split the total bill among any number of people — for dining, group outings, and travel.

Formula

Tip = bill × tip%. Total = bill + tip. Per person = total ÷ people.

Reference Values

  • •20% tip on $80 = $16.00
