Result
100 mbit/s (mbps) =
12.5 MB/s (megabyte/s)
100 × 0.125 = 12.5
Show the working
- 1. Convert 100 Mbit/s (Mbps) to bit/ss: 100 × 1,000,000 = 100,000,000.
- 2. Convert to MB/s (megabyte/s): 100,000,000 ÷ 8,000,000 = 12.5.

- Dial-up modem
- 56 kbps
- Basic broadband
- 50 Mbps = 6.25 MB/s
- Fast fibre plan
- 1 Gbps = 125 MB/s

Good to know: Internet plans advertise megabits (Mb); files are measured in megabytes (MB) — 8 Mb/s = 1 MB/s.
About this tool
Convert data transfer rates between bps, kbps, Mbps, Gbps and MB/s — understand internet speed tests and download times.
Formula
1 Mbps = 1,000 kbps; 1 Gbps = 1,000 Mbps; 1 MB/s = 8 Mbps (a byte is 8 bits).
Reference values
- 100 Mbps = 12.5 MB/s
- 1 Gbps = 125 MB/s
- Speed tests report bits; files are bytes
Questions people ask
Why is my 100 Mbps internet only 12 MB/s?
Bits and bytes: 100 megabits per second is 12.5 megabytes per second, because one byte is eight bits.
How many Mbps is 1 MB/s?
Exactly 8 Mbps — divide MB/s by 8 to get MB... multiply, rather, to go from MB/s to Mbps.
Are connection speeds decimal or binary?
Decimal: network speeds always use 1,000-based units (unlike RAM, which is binary).

How we calculate this
Network speeds use decimal (SI) prefixes: 1 kbit/s = 1,000 bit/s; one byte is eight bits, so 1 MB/s = 8 Mbit/s. Source: IEEE 1541 / SI prefixes.
