About this tool
Add sales tax to a net price or remove it from a tax-inclusive total, with the tax amount shown separately.
Formula
Add: gross = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100). Remove: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100); tax = gross − net.
Reference values
- Tax applies to the net amount, not the total
- Removing tax requires division, not subtraction
- VAT uses the same arithmetic
Questions people ask
How do I add sales tax?
Multiply the price by 1 plus the tax rate as a decimal. At 8%, multiply by 1.08.
Why is removing tax not just subtracting the rate?
The tax was charged on the smaller pre-tax price, so divide by 1.08 instead.
Are sales tax and VAT the same?
They are similar, but sales tax is charged once at the final sale and VAT is charged at each stage.
